Blogging tools

Posted on May 1st, 2007 at 5:41pm

I'm currently sick to the back teeth of Wordpress and would like to use another blogging tool.

These are my requirements:

  • Add / edit / delete posts
  • Add / edit / delete categories
  • Add posts to as many categories as I want
  • RSS feed
  • Won't mess around with anything else on my site

Pages are a nice extra but I can live without them.

My site appears to be set up in a unique way; most of the site is handwritten code but my actual blog and a small number of my pages are powered by Wordpress. The themes / skins are also controlled by Wordpress.

I tried TextPattern first but it wasn't for me; it seemed I could only add posts to up to two categories (and I almost always write posts that span a few categories ;) ) and when I attempted to import my Wordpress database, everything got put into the Posts table.

So I went looking for a blogging script that would either be perfect for me or one I could tweak to fit my needs.

bBlog^ - this script, despite being put into a subfolder, installed itself as though it was in the root directory. I tried to install it again, then decided to install it on an unused domain (no one knows about the domain other than me, so I could have it sit in the root directory without messing up this site).

EggBlog^ - I took a look at the coding before attempting to install this and was surprised - it looked like a normal script! I could see PHP in the index.php file!
I installed it...then dumped the script; the default admin username and password is "admin@admin.admin" and "admin" respectively; after logging into the admin panel, I couldn't see a way to change the username, so the script had to go.

Serendipity^ - this is the script I thought was 'the one' for me.
You can only add posts to one category but there's a plugin available where you can add as many tags to a post as you like. (I use categories the way most people use tags. ;) )
'Out of the box', visitors can choose to subscribe to RSS feeds for comments on any post, subscribe to all posts or only posts in a certain category and commentors can comment to other comments (threaded comments). All of these things you can add to Wordpress but you need to install a bunch of plugins; on Serendipity, this is automatic.
The admin panel is confusing at first and you will get emails every single time someone comments (I couldn't figure out how to stop this).
The reason I decided that Serendipity was not for me is the templating system; you can't include them into regular, hand-written pages; all of the template files are *.tpl. It wasn't until I tried using this that I realised just how spoilt Wordpress has made me with themes / templates / skins, etc.

Wheatblog^ - nightmare to install. There's no automatic installer; you need to go to yoursite.com/wheatblog/tools/wheatblog-mysql.sql, copy the content of that file and insert it into phpMyAdmin after you've deleted the first two lines and found config.php (which is actually called settings.php) and edited those settings...
The README file, which would have been really helpful to have in the root directory of the script, is in the docs folder.
Once I finally got the damn thing installed, I logged into the admin panel to create a test post and realised that you can only add a post to one category at a time. :(
There is a good thing about this script though; the look of the script is controlled completely by CSS. No templates! And if the classes and IDs don't suit you, it looks like it'd be easy enough to change; just go into index.php, view_by_category.php, etc and modify. :P

My favourite is currently Wheatblog, just because it looks like it'll be very easy to modify that script to work perfectly for me. :D
Hasn't been updated since 2005 and EggBlog hasn't been updated since 2006. :| *Stab*
